Authors: Dr.U.Danya

Topic: Agriculture & Biotechnology

Abstract:

Stephania wightii is an endemic medicinal plant traditionally used in India for various ailments. This study was set out to evaluate the aphrodisiac properties of methanolic aerial parts and tuber extracts of Stephania wightii using animal models. The methanolic tuber extract of S. wightii at the dose of 100 mg/kg body weight showed significant aphrodisiac activity on male wistar albino rats as evidenced by an increased the levels of reproductive hormones serum testosterone, Serum Luteinizing hormone and Serum Follicle-stimulating hormone. The efficiency was higher in the extract treated animals compared to the standard drug treated animal.

    Dear Author,

    1) In the whole article & abstract, couldn't find anywhere how many Wistar albino rats (in total + in each of the 4 groups) were used for this experiment. Also, what was the weight (range) of these rats? Can you please elaborate?

    2) What was the % yield of methanolic extract?

    3) Which tests were used for statistical analysis?

    4) As followed by most of the ethnopharmacology experiments, apart from table, it is advisable to present efficacy of test extracts data vs. Std vs. Ctrl group using bar diagram.

    Best Regards
    Melisa
