Title: Comparative study of polyphenols, vitamin C and antioxidant activity of Caralluma species - Edible succulent plants

Objective: The present study was carried out to evaluate the polyphenol, vitamin C estimation and antioxidant activities of methanol extract of succulent herb of Caralluma species. Methods: The contents of total phenol, flavonoids, tannin, vitamin C and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power, metal chelating and total antioxidant activity (TAA) were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant potential of this plant extract were also determined. Results: The results showed that the highest antioxidant activity was found in the plant Caralluma adscendens, C. adscendens var. attenuata, C. adscendens var. fimbriata, followed by C. adscendens var. carnata and C. sarkariae, respectively. C. adscendens var. fimbriata also contained the highest amount of vitamin C and polyphenol substances. Conclusions: In the present investigation it was observed that the methanolic extract of the succulent plants having potential source of polyphenols, vitamin C are responsible for these antioxidant capability and may help in the treatment of free radicals and scurvy.

    This a very good write-up though the format given by TAU was not really used in the presentation.
    Was wondering in this era of high prevalence of cancer, can the anti-oxidant in the above mentioned plants be produced in commercial quantity to be used as a preventive measure against disease like cancer.

      Thank you for your comment. Yes we can isolate compounds which are responsible for antioxidant activity. But it needs highest technology and fund to study further. We are trying to get. Thank you

    which are latest research activities focused on prevalence of cancer?
    Could you pleaws mention how vitamin C are responsible for these antioxidant capability and may help in the treatment of free radicals and scurvy

      Thank you for your comment. Caralluma species are edible succulent plants. Vitamin C is present in Caralluma species and it is also responsible for free radicle scavenging activity and deficiency of vitamin C leads to scurvy. We can use these species to rectify above mentioned problems.

      Thank you for your comment. Yes we can consume these species orally and it prevents us from above mentioned problem and also it has very good anti obesity activity.

      Thank you for your comment. Yes I agree with your suggestion Vitamin E can also used for antioxidant activity. But Caralluma species are rich in vitamin C compared with vitamin E. So we have studied vitamin C.

    it was a good try!!!!thank u author for an innovative it can be used only for treating scurvy and free radicals as vit.c is used for curation of many other diseaes.i suggest that u also use it for the treatment of some other disorders.

      Thank you for your comment. Yes we can use these species to cure some other diseases also. But in this article we have studied antioxidant activity only that is why we have mentioned these diseases only. Other part of works also going on in these species.
