Nutrient needs are higher during adolescence and those with sickle cell disease require a diet that provides plenty of calories, protein, vitamins and minerals. It is therefore pertinent to study the dietary practices of older children who are mainly adolescents with sickle cell disease. This study took place at the sickle cell center Benin City, Edo state using a cluster of clients who are adolescents within the study period of 4 weeks. Clients who participated in this study were both out-patient and in-patients.

A total of 60 clients were interviewed using an interviewer/self administered questionnaire with 51.7% females and 66.6% were 15 years or less. Although 83.3% of the adolescents reportedly take adequate diet, only 35% include fresh vegetables, 41% include fresh fruits, 15% include wheat and 17% include beans in their daily diet. Majority (68.3%) reportedly take ‘special diet’ only when in crisis. This study has shown that adolescents under study do not adequately eat diet that are beneficial to their health and good sources of macro and micronutrients evidenced by the poor irregular intake of fruits, vegetables, beans and wheat products though they claimed to be taking adequate diet.  Consequently, emphasis need to be placed on intake of adequate nutritious diet regularly and not just the intake of ‘special diet’ when they are in crisis.

    Nice study, informative to all
    out of 60 clients, 51.7% females and 66.6% of 15 years or less, amounts to 118.3%. then what would be the sample size.
    what is the new knowledge generated from the study

      Dr Dayanand thanks for the comments. I mean 51.7% of females and 48.3% males. Also I was explaining that 66.6% were below 15 years while 33.4% are above 15 years.
      Conclusively, few adolescents and older children with sickle cell include nourishing diet in their daily meal.

    Nice research work which if the information is implemented, sickle cell patients will live a better life and also live longer. With a larger sample size I think a better representation of sickle cell population would have been involved and a better result would have been gotten. Also there is no conclusion on the abstract but all the same, this a good study.

      Thank you, i agree that larger sample size will assure better result. Bearing in mind that we have words limit, I had to reduce wordings and a lot were lost.
      The summary of the study is that older children with sickle cell disease in this study do not include nourishing diet in their daily meals. This needs to be advocated for by health personnel.

    Dear Author,

    This is a good research study. My suggestions and questions as follows:

    1) "Subjects" or "study subjects" instead of "clients" would sound better

    2) Apart from the approval given by CMD @ Sickle Cell Centre, did your study receive an EC Approval?

    3) In which language was the questionnaire distributed to the adolescents?

    4) Ethical Considerations section in this paper reveals "Verbal consent" of respondents. Since adolescents & children come under "special population" as defined by CR Ethics, written assent and/or inform consent from subjects and LARs respectively need to be in place.

      there was no EC approval, questionnaire was primarily in English but pigin and local languages by an interpreter were used to enhance understanding of questions

    Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetically transmitted disorder of red blood cells which is characterized by severe haemolysis and recurrent vaso-occlusive episodes. This study aimed at determining the perception of pain,frequency, and period in which pain occur most among adolescents with sickle cell disease attending Sickle CellCentre in Benin-city, Edo State.what find from this study it is concluded that majority of the adolescent have average level of perception of pain ? what way it is restricted ? what role of health department to prevent & awareness about (SCD) ?

      Thank you for this observation, this aspect was not intended to be part of this publication. We only intended to present the dietary aspect of the study.

    Good study Author however having read through the study document, it would have been nice to see what roles the socio-demographic variables play as predisposing factors to adequate nutrition/dietary practices among these children.
