ABSTRACT

Background: The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak was declared in Nigeria by the Federal Ministry of Health on 24th July 2014 following the arrival of a male passenger from Liberia. Aim: The study set to assess the knowledge, attitude and practises of Ebola Virus Disease among residents in Enugu, Eastern Nigeria. Primary care providers. Materials and Methods: A total 394 participants were recruited for this descriptive cross sectional study. Data was collected using structured interviewer administered questionnaire focusing on demographic characteristics, knowledge of Ebola virus disease, and infection control practices. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 15. Results: The results were expressed in percentages. It showed relatively low awareness (31.0%) about EVD with the female gender predominating. The most significant source being from the television media. Conclusion: The most important tool to fight EVD is correct adequate information through various media as prevention through improved personal hygiene is key.

    Nice work. I might also add here that the spread of Ebola Virus was significantly reduced by the use of social media. This can be employed in the curb of other diseases in Nigeria. Weldone

    The authors need to be commented for an excellent study on knowledge, attitude and practice related to Ebola Virus Disease in province of Nigeria. On the methodology used, I would have recommended a mixed method approach with both quantitative (survey among randomly selected households)as well as qualitative (FGDs and IDI among health care providers, caregivers and patients). In the results section, the participants had excellent knowledge about modes of transmission but only 35% had complete knowledge, showing that there was a need to intensify information, education and communication messages in mass and mid media to address knowledge gaps and also remove myths and misconceptions. The discussion section could have been elaborated a little more.
    Overall, an excellent study!
